I took a couple of weeks to lay low at the end of the year and really look back at my learning opportunities in 2010 and prepare for a fantastic 2011. There were many ups last year, including my throwing myself into Reiki as a full-time job and learning so much about the work and the wonderful people who were attracted to it. I worked with people and animals of all ages, truly a blessing!
In the summer, I had an idea that caregivers might be interested in learning Reiki for themselves as well as for their charges/patients/loved ones. I had met Cathie McGowan from Sunrise Senior Living here in Wilmette during a wellness fair at the Meskill Center. Cathie is in charge of Marketing for Sunrise. We set up an appointment to talk and I outlined my proposal which included free Reiki sessions for the caregivers at Sunrise (maximum of 6), then I offered Reiki I in the form of “Rays of Hope” by Judy McCracken’s caregiver curriculum.
All of the senior staff came, loved the Reiki and agreed to the workshop. To the person, each and every one of these amazing people – who give their days to working with Alzheimer’s and Dementia folks – every last one is empathic and fantastic in the Reiki work. They loved the work so much that they insisted on the full Reiki I curriculum which I teach to my other students. We finished that up in November.
Because of the wonder the staff has for the work and how greatly it has affected each of their lives, each in a different and very positive manner, they want to share it in a systematic way with their charges.
Diana Iacobucci (Executive Director) and Janice Donald (Reminiscence Coordinator) took the bull by the horns, contacted Corporate Sunrise and we are now doing a full pilot study on the affect Reiki has on Dementia when used in a systematic manner. The first group the team is working with are not on any type of medication for depression or psychosis.
I took on the job of working with one of the residents who is on both types of the above mentioned medications. We’ll call her “N”. N has been at Sunrise for years. During the past two years, she has taken to crying non-stop from morning to night. N will be transferred to a new facility at the end of the month. N is a native Italian speaker, and unfortunately, I do not understand the language. N spends most of her days walking the floor at Sunrise (under supervision) while she is crying. I have found her in this state many times when I have visited Sunrise on various occasions.
After talking with my Master Teacher about possible solutions, he suggested that I give N an attunement. Another healer suggested that I work directly on the back of N’s head, as that is where the information/clogging of the energy gets stuck in people with dementia. So yesterday, N and I began our journey.
When I went to Sunrise at 11am yesterday, I found N crying uncontrollably. One of the staff was holding her, and when I came in, she went to me and I held her for a few minutes then asked her to sit down. I proceeded to give her a card with the Reiki symbol for distance, to help her focus on the forms while I did the attunement. This seemed to quiet her. I then did the attunement, called on the distance symbol to heal N’s past, present and future. As I worked, I could visibly see N begin to shift and quiet. When the attunement was done, she and I went for a walk, I held her hand, and then we found a nice comfy chair for her and Janice and I swaddled N in an afghan blanket. N quieted even more, and soon went to sleep.
About an hour later, I checked on N. She was awake and quietly looking up at the skylight. When asked if she would like some lunch, she distinctly said “no”, so we left her. Prior to my leaving, I requested that when N was ready to eat, to please keep things quiet and calm as possible. As I understand it, she later got up, went to the kitchen and heartily ate her lunch and was quiet until around 3pm when I returned to check on her. After getting her distance card back into her hand, I again worked on her occipital lobe and she quieted again. She finished her snack and a glass of water, went to a comfy chair and sat quietly with her eyes wide open and later, ate her dinner and went to bed without further crying or upset.
Today, N’s caregiver reported that N had no tears this morning or after breakfast or lunch. N’s son was in to visit and he was extremely happy!
More on this soon. Peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
